HERE WE GO AGAIN!
“Wherever you go, there you are” Jon Kabat Zinn
We (my husband and I) have moved AGAIN – for the 15th time! For the last few years, we kept thinking that “this is it” – we are in the place that we are going to be in for the rest of our lives. But that thought process reeks of the idea that we must never, ever say NEVER, or never, ever say ALWAYS!
Change is not only an inevitable part of life; it is constant. Lots of little changes happen every day, and then there are the big changes that happen a little more frequently than we would like. Sometimes that change is “welcome”, and sometimes it is not. In either case, the process of dealing with that change is often the same. I really like that saying “it’s not so much what happens to you in your life that counts; it is what you do with it”. What is the key ingredient? POSITIVITY – or is it? But, more about that later…
So, we made the choice to make this change of venue, and to start something new. It is both exciting and scary, and I actually have a word for this mixed concoction of feelings – TERRICITING. We are on a new adventure, and although things are very different where we are now, it’s the same too, because WE are still US (or I am still ME). That’s why I like this quote from Jon Kabat Zinn. It doesn’t matter where you go, YOU are still YOU.
We still have our family and friends around us; and we have meaningful possessions that accompany us wherever we go (although before this last move, we did a lot of “letting go”and getting rid of stuff (see my blog about that on my website). Many people seem to relate to that phenomena. But you know what? That “cleansing” is a really important part of making that change as smooth as possible. I don’t mean just the physical stuff, but the mental and emotional parts as well. It prepares you for that “begending” that I was talking about in my last posting.
You cannot have a beginning without ending something, and vice versa. And the way that you negotiate your way through that process can make all the difference in how this change is going to affect you. “Resistence is futile” says the Borg in the Star Trek Next Generation series.
Which brings me to the idea of POSITIVITY. Change brings challenges – even the ones that we invite into our lives. We can either have a positive attitude about them, or resist and fight, which gets us nowhere fast. Some things are going to happen whether we like it or not. And other things will happen that we thought we wanted, only to find out that we’d better be prepared to be open and flexible, because it’s not happening the way that we had envisioned. Being able to “let go” and see the positive things (and it may be only ONE good thing) that can come out of this change brings you back into the driver’s seat, going in the direction that serves you best.
Sure, we have some regrets about the changes that we are making. And yet, there are things around the corner that await us – undiscovered possibilities and the potential to grow and develop in new ways, seen and unseen, that neutralize those regrets and make then go away. Remember last week I was talking about going around and around? Well, going around a little differently each time is what change is all about.
Besides, being positive about life is comforting! We are all at a point, with a brand new year ahead of us, that invites us to take that leap of faith, be positive about what will happen, and embrace the results. Can you do that? I will help you. Call me for a free consultation, and we can explore how to make good things happen for you
My husband and I are looking forward to discovering what is next…
Take care, Ingrid Sarrat
