“EXTREME DREAM”

Diana nyad

If you have been unaware of the incredible accomplishment of one baby boomer woman yesterday, I don’t know where you have been, but let me just fill you in…

Below are some excerpts of various articles and news broadcasts heralding the successful completion of the 110 mile swim by Diana Nyad from Cuba to Key West Monday, September 2, 2013.  This was her fifth attempt, starting way back when she was 28 years old.  She is now 64 years young.  And I say “young” because of her spirit and mind, and all the rest follows…

Indeed, “Diana-Nyad’s-success- is all-on-her-head”, experts-say:

And, take note of what Diana says about her accomplishment:

 “I have three messages…

One is we should never, ever give up.

Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams.

Three is it looks like a solitary sport but it takes a team.”

Read the New York Times Article about it here:  http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/03/sports/nyad-completes-cuba-to-florida-swim.html?hp&inf_contact_key=448a944ec51e2e

As a Life Transitions Coach who specializes in helping Baby Boomer Women achieve their dreams and goals, this story has been so inspirational and empowering!  I love the T-shirt that Diana was wearing on many of her interviews that boldly stated “Extreme Dream”.  What does that mean exactly?  Well, her message of “never, ever give up” is for me the essence of that T-shirt logo.  To dream extremely is to “find a way” and make it happen, regardless of the many challenges and obstacles you may encounter.

I have collected a series of articles and newscasts here for you to enjoy and get inspired.  Here are some excerpts:

On “CBS This Morning” Tuesday, Nyad said her mantra through the swim was “find a way.” Referring to the journey, she said, “It doesn’t matter … what you come up against because none of it’s going to be pleasant. You’re hardly ever out there going, ‘Oh, my God, isn’t it a beautiful moon tonight?’ The crew is feeling that. But you’re kind of suffering through the whole thing. So my thought was, ‘everything you come up against say — and this is why people are relating to my story — all of us suffer heartache. All of us suffer difficulties in our lives. And if you say to yourself ‘find a way,’ you’ll make it through.”

Nyad said the hundreds of people who lined the beach in Key West to welcome her after her nearly 53-hour swim were “wonderful.” :”They’re not people reading a sports page every day,” she said. “Those are human beings who want to witness the living out of that message, never, ever give up. And find a way. … And my age, they’re looking at me as a baby boomer, saying life is not over at this age by any means. So I’m more of, shall we say, human spirit story than I am a sports story.”

After solidifying her record, Nyad’s crew enveloped her. She said then, “You’re never too old to live your dreams.”
